Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to bring?
At Bendigo Pet Retreat we supply bedding, bowls and food for your pets. You are welcome to bring in some bedding from home, as long as it is machine washable. We do not accept any form of bean bag bed.

All you will need to bring is your pets current vaccination card and ensure that your dog has a lead and collar and cat a carry cage.

We also encourage you to bring in a coat for your dog during winter. We will happily put them on before lock up for the night.
Can I supply my own food?

We prefer to feed boarders from our selection of premium foods, we feed top quality food to all boarders.  If your dog has a special diet due to allergies etc you are welcome to bring it in and we will feed it to your pet.

Please ensure that all food is clearly labelled with your animal’s name, that portion sizes are also clearly documented so we feed the correct portion.

Please do not bring in large bags of food ie. over 10kg in weight we do not have the storage capacity – so please bring in enough for the stay plus a little extra just in case.

Can I supply my own bowls?
No. We supply the bowls to all boarders. The reason is that we must disinfect and wash each bowl every day. It is impossible for us to keep track of your own bowls. Rest assured the bowl does not matter to your pet.
Can I bring my pet toys?

You are welcome to bring in a couple of toys for your pet. We ask that you limit it to two toys only.
If you are brining in soft toys for your pet, please realize that it may get wet or destroyed.

Unfortunately we have had to ban tennis balls from being brought in as they get into our drains and block them. We cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss of toys.

Why does my dog sleep a lot when the get home?
It is perfectly normal for your dog to sleep more than normal when they get home. This is due to the fact that in the Retreat there is considerable more stimulation and excitement than at home. Your dog also receives plenty of exercise and playtime. So do not worry if your dog sleeps for the first couple of days. Once rested they will be back to their normal self.
What do we need to tell you?

You are responsible for telling us about any medical conditions your pet may have. This includes details of any medication and instructions on how you administer it.

We also need to know if your pet has any special requirements and what you feed them at home.

We need to know any behavioural concerns that might affect your dogs stay, ie scared of other dogs, terrified of storms etc.

We also need to know basic information from you, such as address, phone number etc. This includes having an emergency contact number or person if you are not contactable.
We rely on you to provide us with accurate information on your pets so that their stay with us is smooth and enjoyable.

Can I bring bones in for my dog?
You are welcome to bring in your dog bones. However if our staff inspect them and suspect that they may splinter we will not give them to your dog. So please ensure all bones are safe and will not cause your dog any damage, rib bones etc will not be accepted, but shank bones would be.  Please ensure the bones are clearly labelled with your dogs name.
Can I inspect your facilities?

We actually encourage people to come and inspect our facilities. Due to our cleaning and animal care routine we are only able to offer inspections between 4pm and 5pm Seven days a week. We do not offer any inspections in the mornings.

No appointment is necessary, just pop in and our friendly staff will take you on a tour. Please note during busy peak periods we may not be able to show you through the kennels due to OH&S concerns – so try to plan in advance and come for a visit outside of school and public holidays

Why do you board 2 dogs together and not cats?

One of the reasons we board dogs together and not cats is that we do not have many double pens for cats.

The other and main reason we do not like to board cats together is that cats boarding together are difficult to monitor. As most cats graze rather than eat their food in one go, it is impossible for us to tell whether both cats are eating or not.

So to ensure all animals are appropriately monitored we choose not to board cats in together. If you are adamant that you want your cats in together we will allow it on the condition that you sign an additional agreement stating that we cannot be responsible and cannot appropriately monitor food consumption and toilet habits.

Why do you need a lead to be left for dogs and a carry cage for cats?

The reason we need all animals to have safe restraining devices is for emergency evacuation procedures. We do not have the time to be looking for cages and leads for all animals in the case of an emergency. Please ensure all leads, collars & carry cages are in good working order!

If you do not bring in leads, collars and carry cages we will not board your dog or cat.  For your convenience we do sell the items you need in our retail store at very competitive prices.

How long in advance do I need to book?

The more notice we have the better.  We base staffing levels and food on site on future bookings, so we do need bookings in advance.  We do not accept DROP IN’S.

Assuming that your animal meets the requirements generally a couple of days notice is all we need during a non peak period.  During school holidays particularly Christmas we need several weeks notice.

We do take last minute bookings under exceptional circumstances for existing customers.

My animal needs injections at 12 hours apart, are you able to provide this?

The hours that we provide hands on care to your pets are from 8am to 5pm.  From 5pm whilst someone is always on site, the animals do not get tended to overnight.

So if your animals needs medications at 12 hourly intervals, we are not able to provide that service.

Why do you close during the day?

When this business was purchased in 2006 we were open from 8am to 6pm 7 days a week.  This meant that the core business of caring for the animals was not the priority. Staff had to be available for customers all day.

The only way we can provide the quality of care that we do, including playtime, bathing and the strict cleaning routine was for us to close during the day. It is impossible to provide a high quality of care to the animals when you having to be available to serve customers for 10 hours a day.

From 11am to 4pm we are very busy washing dogs, running playtimes, cleaning, doing laundry, monitoring health, feeding and preparing for the next day.  Staff also need a lunch break as well.

Will you open outside of these hours?

We have a strict 'no customers' outside of 5pm and 8am. For many reasons including ensuring dogs are settled and not disrupted and so that staff have appropriate family time.  Before you consider asking for a drop off outside or 5pm or before 8am – (would you ask e.g. Target to also open for you) – we are a business – not a hotel we do not check in 24 hours a day and we ask you to respect that.

Occasionally if someone is travelling we will open for a pick up or drop off between 11am and 2pm – but after 2pm we have a tight afternoon schedule so will not open the gates between 2pm and 4pm – If you urgently need us to open from 11am to 2pm you must arrange it by appointment in advance.
